Did you know as a swimmer there are certain foods you should avoid while training and competing?


It is best to stay away from anything that causes stomach discomfort from gastrointestinal issues like bloating, cramps, and indigestion. This means foods that are heavy in spices should be avoided, as well as foods that your body isn’t used to such as greasy, fatty, or fried foods. Though, a little healthy fat in your diet is a good thing, such as nuts, olive oil, avocados, and fatty fish.

  • HIGH FIBER FOODS- Take longer to digest, so it’s better to not to eat them right before jumping into the pool. Eating them before practice might cause indigestion and nausea. High fiber foods help prevent heart disease and diabetes, it’s best to save these foods for after practice or swim meets so that you have enough time to digest.


  • SUGARY FOODS - There are a lot of foods out there, high in sugar without you even knowing it. That is why it is important to read labels. Eating sugary foods can lead to crashing during practice or meets. Even sports drinks and fruit juice have more sugar than an athlete needs so it is important to read labels.
